The Holy Week in Montblanc is one of the oldest celebrations in the region. As early as 1601, records mention the existence of the Congregació de la Puríssima Sang, an entity that still organizes the events of this festivity today.
The heart of Montblanc’s Holy Week is the old hospital church of Sant Marçal, where the images that take part in the Good Friday procession are kept. Most of these images date from the 20th century, as the earlier ones were destroyed during the war.
One of the most emblematic elements of the celebration is the presence of the armats, Roman soldiers who guard the Holy Christ. They stand out both for their attire and their unique way of marching through the town’s streets and squares.
