The church of Sant Miquel
22/02/2017
Construction:
Building of the 13th century with later modifications
Characteristics:
It has a Romanesque façade and the interior is in a gothic style. The church has only one nave, without apse, with a wooden cover, coffered ceiling and pointed arches. In the lateral chapels people can see the evolution of the Gothic style, from the simplest to the flowery. This church suffered several alterations according to the artistic styles of every period. We point out the coffered ceiling as an artistic element of great value, as well as the noble shields of the families ‘Ros’ and ‘Janer’.
History:
It was built during a period in which the town was growing and when the Romanesque church of Santa Maria was too small to take in all the inhabitants that Montblanc had. It was seat of the Catalan Courts in 1307 and 1370, and also during the interregnum period gathered the General Catalan Parliament. During the 19th century the church suffered several lootings which decimated its structure and lead to the loss of the altarpieces that it had. In the course of the Civil War it was used as a store. Later on it began its restoration.
