Pla de Santa Bàrbara
Architectural features
Remains of a medieval castle and an early Iberian settlement.
History
The settlement of Montblanc was established around this small hill starting in the 12th century, when, by a charter of settlement (in 1163), king Alfons I ordered Pere Berenguer de Vilafranca to relocate the town to this location. The name Montblanc originates from the lack of vegetation on the hill. It was here that a castle was built next to a small church, along with a rudimentary triangular-shaped wall.
